Which is better to put at the bottom of a fish tank? Rocks or Marbles?

November 4th, 2009 | by admin |

I just got a new fish and I want to put something at the bottom of the tank. I have marbles and my mom said they were better because they don’t cut the fishes fins. Are they better?

they both are ok, rocks are more natural but some people use both :)

I prefer gravel and rocks. It really is a matter of choice. Just don’t get rocks that are too sharp.Marbles are cool too. Do what looks best to you.

If by "rocks" you mean gravel that you purchase from an aquarium store, then it doesn’t really matter. The only reason you might prefer marbles is because they can protect eggs and baby fish, which can fall down between the marbles and avoid being eaten by the adult fish.

If by "rocks" you mean rocks you gather from outside, I’d recommend you don’t do this. Besides the sharp edges that your mom mentioned, they can possibly dissolve in your tank and change the water chemistry in such a way that your fish can get ill or die.

Whatever you do, make sure you wash the stuff you use very thoroughly, to get off any dust and dirt.

If you think about it, what is found more in the sea, rocks or marbles?
Rocks are found more in the fishes natural environment, so they are used to them. I don’t think "God" would put something in the ocean that kills the fish (aside from the natural predators).
Besides, fish use the rocks to clean themselves of dead scales and barnacles.

i use rocks, or gravel in mine, just because it looks more natural and it traps food for the fish to eat later incase our automatic feeder runs out, with marbels it slips and sinks to the bottom.

It is always better to use gravel/ marble chips with under gravel filters. You should set up the bottom using two or three types of gravel in descending sizes. The air passes trough the under gravel filter will suck the excreta and the left over food to the bottom and there it will disintegrated into simple compounds by the microbial action and your tank will always have crystal clear water. If you can have one or two Amazon sword type plants it will be still better. If you use under gravel filter and if there is no interruption in power supply for more than two hrs, you need not change water for moths even up to six months. The basic principle is similar to a pond ecosystem. You can decorate it with some rocks. But some fishes have a tendency to hide. In any case please use gravel and a under gravel filter and it is very cheap comparing with the power filters. So follow your mummy’s direction and all the best.

natural rocks or artifical rocks made of poly-resin these are the colored aquarium rocks you will see at any petstore. You want a size gravel that will (depending on species of fish) allow bottom feeders such as catfish to be able to get loose peices of food from the bottom. If you have goldfish you want gravel that is smooth and meduium in size, due to they like to move gravel around for food. Marbels will make gravel syphoning a tank very hard, and the trapped debri at the bottom will cause water quality issues bringing me back to the gravel syphoning issue.
