I don't think it will work for blackboard paint finish as it will not be that well adhered to the dense marble surface and won't take the abuse.

Marble is an expensive stone. I would cut a piece of rigid plywood to the size you want and dab a few spots of silicone and press it against the fireplace. This could then be removed later.
References :
Qualified House Painter & Decorator - 30 yrs

I'd recommend NOT painting over the marble-- you'll ruin the natural look of the stone. Isn't there another place where you could fit the type of blackboard you're looking for?
References :
You don`t need to prime it just undercoat it and finish it off with your top coat.Try and undercoat it to a colour as near to the top coat........good luck.
