I’m interested in working for AllStone in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They fabrication and install exquisite kitchen counter tops and bathroom surfaces made of granite and marble. My concern is that I may not know what I need to get hired on just yet and I was wondering if anyone out there has some advice. I am aware that I can just go to them and ask but I would like to make a good first impression and appear as if I know a little something at least.
I work at a countertop fabricator and install wholesale company currently. The job you are applying for will be the deciding factor. Are you planning on working in house or as an installer? If you are planning on working in house you need to have a knowledge of the materials for starters-colors, edge profiles, pricing and how to handle the customers, etc. To step up from there, you will need to know how their estimating system works and be very detail-oriented. Marble and granite are very high end material and the attention to detail is a must in bidding and fabrication. One polished edge where their shouldn’t be could blow the whole top….
Next, you will need to understand toolpath and how their router cuts out the materials from the slabs. Most likely, complex kitchens will be phototemplated rather than hard measured. This means that the company will take pictures of the walls and cabinet face to determine how the new tops will fit into the space. Those pictures will be downloaded and the engineer will need to pull the points off the program and match them up with the stickers on the cabs and walls. There is a definite detailed engineering aspect in this stage of the business.
If you are planning on doing the installs, you will definitely need some experience unless they are willing to send you along as a "helper" or installer-in-training.
I would suggest that you stress that you are detail-oriented. This is HUGE when you are dealing with high end materials. A willingness to learn and excel is also a major point with hard surface fabrication companies. Like I said, what you are applying for really will be the deciding factor on what you need to know about the product.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy it!
