The bathroom floor tiles were removed and now it has uneven concrete area. Do I screed or level it before W/P?
October 10th, 2009 | by admin |I am going to put a 30 x30 marble tiles. If screeding do I use a thick plastic sheet first on the concrete and pour in the cement mix. If level with a self leveling concrete mix do I have to use the plastic sheet? How long does it take to cure? Many thanks
Use a floor leveling compound from a tile store or warehouse, usually referred to as engineering leveler.
Before applying this apply a sealant adhesive as Bondcrete to prime the existing floor, this will help the leveler to bond to the existing.
Make sure you have a clean dust free concrete floor before you apply the Bondcrete.
After the leveling compound is dry, then apply the waterproofing membrane. That is to seal the floor before tiling, this is also purchased at a specialist tile store or from some hardware stores. There are a few different one’s out there so choice is yours, can be bituminous, fiberglass, latex types etc. Depends what you prefer and can afford. The instructions usually call for at least two good coats, do not scrimp on this procedure or you will have trouble down the line.
Allow drying time before starting tiling.
Put thought into the pattern layout of the tiles before starting to lay them, too many people just start laying and get into problems. Check for squareness of the area, allow for fall to drainage etc. Collate the cut tile edges into your layout for appearance, and even draw a plan with chalk on the floor if you think you might wander.
These are some of my professional tips free of charge, I have been laying tiles for some 45years as well as being a Contract Builder.
I point out that if you have insurance problem in the future with leaking shower or flooring tiles, the insurance will be denied on the grounds that a licenced contractor did not do the waterproofing.
Hope this helps.
