Does Marble floor tile contain asbestos?

October 20th, 2009 | by admin |

I am in the process of installing marble floor and ceiling tiles….the marble is beinge and white in colour. I have a lot of dust throughout the house and my neighbour reminded me of an article he read somewhere about marble containing asbestos? Does anyone know?

If there is a lot of dust you should wear a mask anyway, but no asbestos these days.

Interesting question…I am not sure on that one as it depends upon which stone is being used. (source and type). To be sure you should wear masks when cutting; this is a normal precaution anyway; and also goggles as it is easy for small particles to enter by eyes.
Make sure you clean your skin well after working and before eating and you would be fine.
As a kid we used to play with bits of asbestos (father was a builder) but have had no problems up to now!

It is possible, but highly unlikely. Check with the manufacturer and the product literature. The permissible amount for a natural stone product is tiny, but the dust should not be breathed anyway. Silicosis and "white lung" are dangerous, as well as mesotheliosis.

no. no asbestos in floor or ceiling tiles anymore. There may still be some that you run into demoing remodel jobs, but none on the market anymore. The thing with asbestos is it is such a hard material that your body can’t break it down. The problem with that is if a small, microscopic particle is inhaled and makes it to your lungs, your bodies natural reaction is to try to break down the foreign material and remove it from your body. The asbestos particle is to hard to break down, so the attacking cell dies in place before it’s job is done and forms scab material. Over a period of about 35 years this process is continued until the scab material in the lung is so big it causes difficulty breathing. This is what is generally accepted as what we call asbestosis. Mesothelioma is another matter that attacks the body quicker. A regular dust mask will not help with the offending asbestos fibers as it will not stop fibers small enough to enter the celia of the lungs. A properly fitted particulate filter is required.

Is it real marble? then no marble is a natural stone / crystal material but if you are using cultured marble then it is possible the composite might contain some asbestos and of course then all precautions apply but remember too that as they discovered the carcinogenic effect of asbestos it has all pretty much been outlawed in uses so it could very well be glass fibers or some such material in any case and no matter what always wear a mask
